The AnimeDiscover Rules

A few rules to keep AnimeDiscover safe and fun for everyone

AnimeDiscover is all about anime. It’s a place that gives people the power to make the world happier.
To keep the awesomeness of our community going, treat people on AnimeDiscover as you would like to be treated: with respect. We trust you to be responsible, and millions of users respect that trust. Here are the basic rules developed according to this principle. Please take them seriously and respect the spirit in which they were created.

1./ Posts should be directly related to Anime.

Crossover comics and fanart are allowed.
Rule of thumb: If you can't tell it's Anime-related without any accompanying text then it's not relevant.

Restricted content
AnimeDiscover upholds a strict minimum standard of quality to prevent people from trying to easily "farm karma" by posting simple submissions that are likely to be upvoted by a wide group of people simply due to how easily and quickly they can be looked at and understood.
As such, the following types of submissions are banned:
Additionally it is important to note that gifs, infographics, charts, physical creations, and announcements, key visuals, and other news are exempt from this rule.
Photos of anime-specific things in real life will generally be allowed. This includes but is not limited to; itasha, statues, murals, trains with anime characters all over them, tattoos, etc, etc.

2./ No pornography, hentai

AnimeDiscover is not for pornography or sexually explicit content. We work closely with law enforcement and we report child exploitation.

Do not post Hentai
To expand on this rule, submissions containing lightly NSFW content are acceptable. If you can usually view it on Safebooru, it's probably acceptable to post. This means underwear, bikinis, cleavage, butts, light fanservice etc is fine. Things that are not lightly NSFW: Female nipples, genitals of either gender, heavily implied sexual content, sexual contact between two characters.
Comments may contain heavily NSFW anime content such as screenshots or gifs, so long as they are from non-hentai sources, tagged NSFW, and are relevant to the discussion. Use your judgement. If the content you want to post is not something you would expect to see in the anime being discussed, it probably isn't appropriate.

What is a NSFW?
Not suitable/safe for work or NSFW is an Internet slang or shorthand tag used to mark contents which contain ecchi, sexuality, horror, profanity or disturbing content, which the viewer may not wish to be seen accessing in a public or formal setting such as in a workplace or school.

How do I tag NSFW?
1./ After you posted a pictures by 3 steps:
2./ Share Link:

3./ Do not post untagged spoilers

I highly recommend you read this section completely; it contains many examples and clarifications about this rule that people have previously been confused about. Understanding these rules is key, failing to properly tag your spoilers will get you banned.

What is a spoiler?
A spoiler is a piece of information from the story of a show that knows without having seen the show could negatively impact a viewer's experience.
A typical example would be, for a movie with a twist at the end, if someone tells you the twist before you go see the movie, then all of the surprise and suspense can be lost because you already know what happens. It is important to note that, while this would generally be considered a spoiler by everyone, we also consider less important things spoilers.

How do I tag spoilers?
1./ If you post Ask & Discuss or comment:
2./ After you posted a pictures by 3 steps:
3./ Share Link:

4./ No violence, gory, hate speech, bullying, deceptive and harmful content

Don’t post or comment with violent, gory content or content that encourages others to do things that might cause them to get hurt or to commit specific acts of violence, especially kids. If posting graphic content in a news or documentary context, please be mindful to provide enough information to help people understand what’s going on in the content.
We don’t support content and comment that promotes or condones violence against individuals or groups based on race or ethnic origin, religion, disability, gender, age, nationality, veteran status or sexual orientation, or whose primary purpose is inciting hatred on the basis of these core characteristics.
Don’t spread wrong information. Deceptive content, comment and account may get removed depending on their severity.
This is basically here for the same reason internet communities don't permit spam. It is a manipulative way of making money by spreading a link around the internet. We don't want to encourage this behavior, especially since some of the websites that facilitate doing this are harmful.
You may not provide to or post on or through the Website any graphics, text, photographs, images, video, audio or other material that constitutes junk mail, spam, advertising, and/or commercial offers. You may not repeat the same posting multiple times in a day or week.

Follow rules:

5./ No spamming, manipulation and multiple account abuse

Everyone hates spam. Don’t post large amounts of untargeted, unwanted or repetitive content and comments in order to increase views. Creating multiple accounts with overlapping uses or in order to evade the temporary or permanent ban of a separate account is not allowed.

Bots / Novelty Accounts
We explicitly do not allow bots on AnimeDiscover, even "useful" bots. Whenever we see a comment or post by one, that bot is banned. We would appreciate it if you blacklisted AnimeDiscover in your bot's configuration to save us the hassle.
If you really think your bot would be beneficial to AnimeDiscover, please message us explaining why and we'll let you know if we will permit it. In general, novelty accounts will also be removed on sight, being very similar to bots in how they operate.

Limit low-effort submissions
These will be monitored closely if there is a spike in low-quality submissions. Posts will be more likely to be removed if user history shows a high frequency of low-effort posting.
Less likely to be removed if there is plenty of discussion going on in the comments.

Reposts
Do not repost anything from the top 100 all-time or anything posted within the last 3 months.
Use the search bar and your search engine to ensure that you are not reposting recent content or already answered questions.

6./ No personal and confidential information and impersonation

To protect the safety of private individuals, anything that reveals other people’s personally identifiable information (including personal social media accounts of non-public figures without the consent of the original party) is not allowed.
You may not impersonate others (person, group or brand) on AnimeDiscover in a manner that is intended to or does mislead, confuse, or deceive others.

7./ No illegal activities, copyright and trademark infringement

Content depicting or advocating illegal activity will not be tolerated. Such acts may be reported to law enforcement and users committed these acts may be permanently banned from AnimeDiscover.
Respect originality and creativity. Give credit where credit is due. We reserve the right to reclaim usernames on behalf of businesses or individuals that hold legal claim or trademark on those usernames. Accounts using business names and/or logos to mislead others may be permanently banned.
Fanart and cosplay should be sourced with artist name in the title or comments. Please try to find the original artist using both of the following tools:
Always try to credit the original artist and link back to them either in the title and link of your post or in the comments.
If you edited someone else's work, you still need to give the original artist credit.

8./ Do not link to illegal content

The full rule is, "Do not link to/lead people to torrents or unofficial streams/downloads". This also applies to manga/scanlations, light novels, and all other illegal/unlicensed items.
Screenshots with watermarks of illegal streaming sites, posts linking to images hosted on scanlated sites, all fall under the purview of this rule. Re-host images to imgur, edit the watermark away, etc.
This rule does not apply to simply mentioning the name of a fansub group (though it does for torrent/streaming sites), so long as the intent is not to explicitly lead someone towards places where their content can be found.
Links to single full songs will be permitted, however anything getting close to linking a full OST is not permitted. This includes single videos of an entire album, playlists of every song and comments containing links to every song separately.
Furthermore, leading someone towards proxy services is forbidden.

Why?
If you are unfamiliar with copyright law, basically, the United States and Japan have both signed the Berne Convention, which provides for automatic reciprical copyright. Simply put, all anime released in Japan is copyrighted in the United States, thus linking to non-official streams, downloads, etc is illegal.
In addition to that, I think, as a community, it is healthier to make a point of supporting those official means of acquiring anime. Funimation and Crunchyroll each provide free streaming, ad supported options. Showing that there is a market for anime outside of Japan will only increase the number of shows that officially become available to us.
Finally, to those of you outside of the U.S., we realize that there aren't many, if any, services for you to watch anime online legitimately, and that even buying anime on DVD or BluRay is not always an option. I hope that you understand the position we've taken at AnimeDiscover with respect to this issue, even if it may be inconvenient for you.
Proxy sites serve to circumvent licensing and usually aim to sidestep the intent of the distributors, and as such linking/leading people to them will not be permitted either. 99% of the times a proxy is brought up it's equivalent to the above.

9./ Do not use link shortening services and try to sell things here

This rule exists to protect our users from malicious websites. It is possible to change where shortened links point. It is not immediately clear if the website linked is malicious. They can be used to avoid the spam filter.
Following from above, we don't want people using AnimeDiscover as a means of making money. AnimeDiscover is meant to be a place to enjoy anime, not for people to make money off of.
Links to sales or products that you do not profit from are OK, but it is not OK to try to sell your own stuff here.
Using the referral scam rule and this together effectively means affiliate links (such as amazon's service) are not allowed.
Links to crowdfunding websites are not allowed even if you do not profit from it.

10./ "Unwritten" Rules

The above rules should be considered AnimeDiscover specific rules. Basically, if you wouldn't say something in a public place or in front of people who you want to have a good impression of you, you shouldn't post it here.
Trolling and shitposting mean walking a very fine line. We will ban you if you take it too far. Also, even as a joke, posts advocating suicide or mentioning that you feel a user should kill themselves are never appropriate, and are grounds for an instant ban.
In addition, the mods will use their judgement to remove any post or comment that they believe is likely to cause an argument (drama) that may be linked to from elsewhere, as we could honestly do without that sort of attention.

11./ Miscellaneous Reasons for Post-Removal.

Here are some things that are likely to get your post removed by moderators but do not fit neatly under any of the above reasons, or are specific sub-cases of things noted above. This list will grow and shrink as time passes.

12./ Invasions

Any attempt to organize a group to up/downvote/comment on a thread will likely result in all participants being banned from AnimeDiscover. Additionally, for those of you from outside AnimeDiscover, targetting us in this manner will result in bans as well as the removal of all relevant comments and posts.

Content and comment may be removed and account may be banned if fail to follow the above.
We did remove it, then it was because we think it broke the rules. It is completely acceptable to politely present an argument as to why it is not against the rules after we inform you what rule it broke, which in some cases results in us reinstating the post. That said, if we say we're not going to allow the post, please just accept it and move on. Arguing with us or insulting us once we've made it clear we will not approve it will not help you and has resulted in people being banned in the past.

Reminders

The downvote button is not a disagree button.
Don't downvote because you disagree, downvote because a post or comment isn't relevant or doesn't contribute.

Report rule-breaking content. We need your help!
Please help out the mods, we are not always stalking the /new queue so call our attention with the report button! We rely on YOU for half of the rule enforcement around here, we are only volunteers doing this in our free time after all. You can also modmail us anytime with questions, suggestions and/or concerns. We are here to help.

Disclaimer

This list is not exhaustive.
Our main goal as moderators is to maintain content that all fans can enjoy and promote healthy interactions between members of the community. Unfortunately, the list of rules above is not exhaustive and moderators are forced to resolve new issues on a case-by-case basis every day. When these rules do not encompass everything that must be acted upon, they will be subject to change.
We are always open to discussion via mail or chat. Do inquire about removals or bans but do not pester us if we have firmly stated against your case.
